For generations, church was not only a space for a congregation to gather and worship, but a space to embrace and elevate fashion in the Black community. The term “Sunday’s best” meant that you presented yourself in your grandest attire, to show glory to the God you served. As the community has modernized, some among the younger generations have eased up on dressing in their Sunday’s best on any given Sunday, even Easter Sunday. However, the parishioners of Refreshing Spring Church of God in Christ in Riverdale in Prince George’s County, Md., are keeping the tradition, and the term, alive.
